The Lapse – True Stories Gussied Up – is the beautiful creation of Kyle Gest. Beyond the first person narrative, “gussied up” refers to the addition of sound effects – squeaky doors, animal noises, musical instruments, etc, as well as the occasional narrative comment by Kyle himself, as the featured speaker tells their own personal story. At times it seems like an old time radio show, while other times a stage performance reminiscent of A Prairie Home Companion, and on occasion, as though you’re sitting in someone’s living room.
The stories are both true and unrehearsed, which is remarkable, as the narratives possess a hand crafted feel and the storylines border on the unreal. Credit for the compelling audio is given to Kyle Gest. “With extensive foley work our stories are designed to recreate the scene as it happened.” True that.
